1. Vikings
To start our list we have a series that takes elements from our world and our history and creates a new universe, Vikings. It is a historical drama created and written by Michael Hirst for the History channel. It was shot in Ireland, but it is a Canadian production that was launched in 2013.
Inspired by the sagas of Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best known Nordic heroes, a Viking who was the plague of England and France. A 10-part documentary, The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick tells the story of the Vietnam War. It is written by Geoffrey C. Ward and directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, and narrated by Peter Coyote. It was launched on the PBS channel in 2017.

4. Ascension: Ottoman Empire
A series of Turkish origin, Ascension: Ottoman Empire is yet another of the best war series, mixing this genre with history. The cast includes Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu and Tommaso Basili, being directed by Emre Şahin and written by Kelly McPherson.

5. War and Peace
Guerra e Paz is a historical TV drama that was initially shown on BBC One in 2016. It was produced by the BBC itself in conjunction with some other companies, being a six-part adaptation of the book of the same name by Leo Tolstoy. The series is written by Andrew Davies and directed by Tom Harper.
The saga begins in the Russian Empire in 1805. Follows Pierre, Natasha and Andrei, three young men who are desperately finding some meaning for their lives. At the same time, the French army commanded by Napoleon is getting closer and closer to the Russian border.

6. Land Girls
Of English origin, Land Girls is a drama series originally shown on BBC One in 2009. It was created by Roland Moore in memory of the 70th anniversary of World War II. In the cast, there are Summer Strallen, Christine Bottomley, Jo Woodcock and Becci Gemmell.
Nancy Morrell, Joyce Fisher, Bea Holloway and Annie Barratt follow, four girls who will start working on a farm owned by Frederick Finch, in addition to the Hoxley family mansion.

7. Rome
A series of historical drama that was a collaboration between Italy, the United States and England, Rome was launched between 2005 and 2007. 10. The Man from Castelo Alto
One of the best war series, O Homem do Castelo Alto is also in our selection of the most recommended fantasy series. It was created by Frank Spotnitz, based on the book of the same name launched in 1962 and written by Philip K. Dick.
It takes place in a parallel universe where the Axis powers won World War II, with Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan now dividing the USA between the Great Nazi Reich and the Japanese Peaceful States.

11. Nobel
Of Norwegian origin, Nobel is a series that was launched in 2016 on the NRK channel. As director, was Per-Olav Sørensen, accompanied by Mette Marit Bøstad and Stephen Uhlander in writing and Håkon Briseid in production.
In the series, two stories come together very carefully when a family man and soldier returning from the war becomes a pawn in an international political game.

It serves as a dramatization of events about the 1916 Easter Uprising, which took place in Ireland. It shows several fictional characters in Dublin, starting right after the start of the First World War.

15. Five Came Back
To top it off, we have an American documentary based on a 2014 book of the same name, written by journalist Mark Harris. It was originally a film, but when it was released on Netflix it was separated into three parts.
