HBO Max and HBO Go: what are the differences?

HBO has always been a popular channel for those who subscribe to cable TV services. With this channel, I was able to watch completely exclusive series and films that had just left the cinema and were not available on other channels. Of course, this ends up being quite expensive, but now it is much more accessible with apps like HBO Go and HBO Max.

For those who do not know, these are two streaming services that have the catalog of the American channel. Only because they are two completely different apps, they can easily confuse interested users. For the avoidance of doubt, let's talk a little about the differences between HBO Max and HBO Go. Why are there so many HBO apps?

As we mentioned earlier, both HBO Go and HBO Max are streaming services from HBO. Both have series and films from the channel's catalog and can be accessed with a subscription.

To find out exactly what their differences are and why there are two of them, we will have to go back to the beginning of the story. It all started when HBO decided to make a special app for its subscribers, at a time when streaming was still in its infancy.

This app was HBO Go and it was launched in 2010 so that subscribers to the Pay TV channel could have access to the catalog outside the TV. It was not possible to access the app without a subscription to the channel, basically.

In 2015, the company wanted to enter the scheme of streaming services instead of offering an app only to those who had the channel. That's when an app called HBO Now was launched and could be accessed by anyone who made a cheap subscription to the app.

It worked like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other services of this type. A few years later, HBO Go was also released to anyone, just requiring a basic subscription and made within the app itself.

With that, HBO now has two streaming apps that offered the same thing. In 2020, the company took an important step to resolve this confusing issue: it launched HBO Max.

This is a new streaming service from HBO and aims to be the only one. To this end, the company will discontinue both HBO Go and HBO Now, leaving only Max to all its subscribers.

Differences from HBO Go and HBO Max

Now that we know more about the different HBO apps, let's focus more on the differences between Go and Max. There aren't that many different things, but it's worth explaining.

HBO Max availability

HBO Go has been available for a few years in Brazil and still works perfectly. There is no prediction of when it will be discontinued here, but it should happen at some point, after all, it already happened in the U.S. during 2020.

HBO Max officially debuted in May 2020 in the USA and has not yet officially arrived here. Despite not having a specific date, the company announced that this service will arrive in Latin America only in 2021.

As mentioned earlier, both HBO Go and HBO Max work by subscription. Fortunately, they both offer a 7-day free trial, so you can try it out and see if you really want to subscribe.

As HBO Max is not yet available in Brazil, we only know the price in dollars. In the US, the service costs $ 14.99 a month.

The HBO Go subscription can be purchased in the following ways:

• 1 month: R $ 34.90
• 3 months: R $ 89.90
• 12 months: R $ 289.90

The current price here is not much different from what we see in other services of this type. Of course, when HBO Max arrives here, prices are unlikely to be that different.

Catalog

It is also worth talking about differences in the catalog of the two applications as well. As is to be expected, the content of the two services is practically the same, with Max having the advantage of having Warner's new films exclusively.

So, if you like exclusive series and war movies, spy movies or even fantasy movies, HBO Go and HBO Now are wonderful. But if you prefer to watch anime or Netflix series, a competing service may be more suitable
