How to set up parental controls on YouTube?
It is always important to make sure your kids are safe on the internet, especially on the websites or apps they use most. For many children and teenagers, YouTube is one of the most used apps and, although it does not allow videos of adult content, it is still possible to find videos inappropriate for youngsters. Fortunately, there is a type of parental control on YouTube.
Another good news is that it is quite easy to set up this parental control on YouTube. You can find out how with our guide below!
Setting up parental controls on YouTube
As mentioned, you can set up parental controls on YouTube in a very simple way. In fact, you can do this in just four steps, as shown below:
Step 1: To get started, open the YouTube app on the device where you want to apply parental controls. It can be a smartphone or tablet, it makes no difference.
Then click on the profile photo icon of the account you want to place parental control on.
Step 2: Then, you will see a tab with some options. Among them, you must click on “Settings” to move on.
Step 3: You’ll see a number of different options related to your YouTube account settings. But to proceed, you must click on “General”.
Step 4: among the options on the “General” tab, you will find “Restricted Mode” below. Click the button next to it to activate this mode, which basically functions as parental control on YouTube.
With this option active, your children will not be able to access videos with adult content. The application itself says that the filter is not 100% accurate and that this setting only applies to the YouTube app on that specific device.
Then you will have to repeat these steps on other devices if you want to maintain parental control on YouTube on them. Other than that, the configuration is not protected by passwords, so your older children can easily circumvent it.
Of course, we have other solutions for those who want something more restricted, whether for parental controls at Google or more generally. See more in the topic below!

Some of our main tips are:
- Qustodio: this app can be used on multiple devices, is very customizable and has many features. In addition to blocking websites and apps, you define what times your child's device can be used;
- MSpy: This software allows you to monitor the use of apps, conversations, visited websites and more. In addition, you can use it to see where your child is at the moment via the device's GPS;
- Kaspersky Safe Kids: this is a very complete tool, which allows you to even see the battery level of your child's cell phone. Other than that, you establish usage times and what kind of apps can be accessed;
- Screen Time: this app is more focused on defining the times that your children can use the internet or smartphone. Still, it is also possible to monitor the use of your devices;
- Boomerang: This tool can be used to monitor the use of your children's devices. It is very basic and only has mobile apps, so it’s good to have that in mind.
