1. Prices and Plans Offered

The first of the categories in our review of Netflix vs HBO Max is pricing. After all, when considering hiring a new service, you should always consider how much you will have to spend monthly to access it.

Let's start by talking about the biggest streaming platform, Netflix – see here the best series available on it – which has three different plans: Basic, Standard and Premium.

The first one, the Basic, costs only R$ 21.90 per month, but it doesn't allow users to watch on more than one screen at the same time and limits the quality of reproduction to standard resolution.

The second, Default, costs R$ 32.90 per month and allows you to access content on two screens simultaneously and guarantees playback in HD quality, or 720p.

The most expensive plan, the Premium, costs R$ 45.90 a month and increases the number of simultaneous screens to four, making it the ideal option for families or for sharing with friends. In addition, it releases playback in Ultra HD resolution, or 4K.

Now let's tackle the TV channel's service with some of the most famous series of the moment, like Game of Thrones and Westworld, HBO Max. It emerged in 2021 to replace HBO Go and has become one of the most popular alternatives to Netflix.

HBO Max is one of the best apps for watching TV on your smartphone and offers two monthly plans: one costs R$19.90 for individual use only on smartphones and tablets and the other costs R$27.90 and allows simultaneous use in any device. Other than that, the  background ensures 4K resolution in compatible content, which is already much more affordable than Netflix.

Another very important category to consider between Netflix vs HBO Max is the collection of each of the platforms. Both offer a large selection of original films and series, but only one of them offers series not produced by the company itself, through contracts with other distributors.

Netflix offers thousands more titles, such as classics like The Walking Dead, Rick and Morty, Vikings, Grey's Anatomy and Breaking Bad. Also, there are very famous movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Irishman.

In HBO Max the user finds, when talking about series, only original productions (which are not available on any other platform), such as Watchmen, Game of Thrones, Westworld and True Detective. Other than that, there are exclusive Warner Media productions and reunion specials from classic series such as Friends and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

In the movie business, HBO has purchased rights to several of the most famous of other companies, such as The Matrix, Hereditary, The Shining, The Joker and V for Vendetta.

3. Compatibility

Another very interesting area to assess when comparing Netflix vs HBO Max is their compatibility, meaning what devices they work on.

This category is one in which both are essentially the same. They work on almost any device you can imagine, as long as they have internet access.

They work on any smartphone or tablet, whether it's Android or iOS. Unfortunately, being relatively new in Brazil, HBO Max still doesn't have an app for Smart TVs or video game consoles.

At the very least, it is possible to stream the app content to the Fire TV Stick, Roku and Chromecast.

Service compatibility

You can also download all content from both platforms on any device you want, so you can watch it offline later.

4. Image quality

This is a very important category, as it is Netflix vs HBO Max, services for watching series and movies. It's one in which Netflix wins without leaving any doubts from the competitor,

Netflix offers up to 4K resolution (limited by internet connection speed) on its most advanced plan, ensuring you can watch whatever you want in the best quality possible.

As we mentioned before, HBO Max also offers 4K resolution and even charges cheaper for that. Of course this is only available on their multiscreen plan and is something that can be limited by the speed of your internet connection.
